Introduction

When it comes to using technology, I would say I would have a lot to learn. I currently teach 3rd grade at a relatively small Catholic school in Hastings, NE. There are about 250 students in the K-5 building, with two sections of each grade. We have some difficulty using technology in our building for a couple different reasons, which I am sure I will get into later. However, for now I know I am looking forward to learning how to use technology as a school leader for the best benefit of my school.

In this class, EDU 617, taken through Creighton University, entitled "Leadership in Administration in Educational Technology," I will be looking into the topics of Branding, Leading Professional Development, and Resource Selection. I am excited to dig deeper into these topics and learn how to use them to benefit my school both now and in the future!

  1. Melanie - I think we all have a lot to learn about technology integration in our classrooms. Just when we think we have it all under control, the world evolves and we have to start all over again! I look forward to hearing about how you use technology at the elementary level. Here's to another course!

  2. Melanie,
I am glad you are excited about the topics you will study in this course. Even though your school has limited technology at this point and time that may actually be a blessing as all of the things that you will learn can help you help the leaders in your school implement technology effectively. So many times schools implement tech without thinking about student outcomes. Technology can help our students collaborate and create in completely new ways, if and only if we know why we are doing what we are doing. I hope throughout this course you will be able to identify how to lead so that technology supports the learning in the school.

  3. Melanie,
When I was in the classroom, third grade was my favorite! Integrating technology in the classroom has it challenges especially at the elementary level. I am interested to hear and learn about the barriers your school will face. One of the biggest barriers I can recall was identifying the time to integrate technology. Reading instruction was differentiated and my students were only exposed to technology during computer center time. I look forward to following your findings via your blog!

  4. Melanie, I too have taught in a very small school. In these places technology is a focus, but funding say otherwise. I can see tech to be challenging with limited resources. I remember having to be very inventive with tech and trying to avoid the chalk board. I despise that sound... Good luck and thanks for sharing. I like the books along the sides as well.

  5. Melanie, being off Facebook and Twitter for Lent is really hard. It's so bad that when Google+ (yeah, it still exists) e-mailed me with a notification that you'd made this blog I clicked immediately, desperate to know what is going on in the outside world. Thank you for making this blog and doing it on Blogspot/Google!

  6. Melanie,

My school is limited in technology as well. I am looking forward to hearing what you learn about branding. I think that is something that many Catholic schools can do a better job of. One think that the Archdiocese of Omaha is pushing is this "Awaken Greatness" campaign through lovemyschool.com. I think it is a good way to present a unified front on Catholic education throughout Omaha and the surrounding areas.
